PoW Hostel Rerwick Head

Rerwick Head contains a farm and the remains of a Coastal Artillery and Observation Site. Whilst it is more than possible that there were PoWs at this site employed on the farm one thing I can say is that it was not called Rockworks PoW Camp as stated by Secret Scotland

Secret Scotland states that the site at Rerwick Head was a PoW Camp called Rockworks on Orkney.

The reality is that a site called Rockworks is to be found between the two known Main PoW Camps on Orkney, Camps 34 and 60. The Rockworks sit is quarry working in support of the construction of the Churchill Barriers AND NOT an accommodation site.

The location that Secrete Scotland gives for Rockworks is at Rerwick Head. There is in fact one of many Coast Artillery and Observation sites at Rerwick Head along with a Farm.

The site as it exists today contains the remains of a coast gun mount along with spotting and observation bunks, support bunkers, the remain of hut bases and the outline of hut bases. Of notes there is also a concrete encased Nissen Hut. Whilst it is more than possible that there were PoWs at this site as a sub Camp and employed on the farm one thing I can say is that it was not called Rockworks.

Anyway, I have decided to include this site in with this project as an example as to what was left behind from the various Nany and Coastal Artillery sites from WWI and WWII.
